School expansion creates jobs for teachers, options for parents

Students will soon be moved to a new location with more space

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Nearly a dozen teacher jobs are opening in Southport because one school is outgrowing its current location.

Southport Christian School has been located off Highway 133 for more than 17 years.

Now, school leaders are looking for more space because they say there has been a waiting list for students for the past two years.

Last week, the school received the final zoning permits to begin construction on a new building.

The new site will be located behind Beach Road Baptist Church and will offer 16 new classrooms.

The new building allows the school to expand and serve more students. Leaders plan to add a preschool and middle school classes, with plans to add a high school in the near future.

Principal Lisa Kjome says private schools offer parents more options for their child's education.

Planning for pedestrian safety

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT)
-  The City of Southport is working to
fix a few pedestrian problems by reaching out to the community for help.

Right now, Southport is
forming a pedestrian transportation plan.

The group has identified
several locations near the downtown area near N. Howe Street and Moore Street
that could be dangerous for walkers.

The city received over
$30,000 in grant money from the state to formulate a plan for development.

The city has met with
state officials and community members on two separate occasions.

The group is in the very
early stages of development but they say they want to add more crosswalks and
possibly add "refuge islands" to make the area safer.

There's a questionnaire
available for public input.

Their work involves the construction of a temporary dock and other temporary structures.

Currently, there are no plans to do any work on the weekends.  However, they will have security on site day and night.

Movie filmed on location brings perks to Wilmington business

Gayleane White, co-owner of Two Fat Ladies, says when the restaurant gets back to business, loyal customers will notice several changes that were done by the film crew.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Film and TV crews in New Hanover County and surrounding areas have been pretty common for the past couple of years. A lot of filming takes place at Screen Gems Studios, but a lot is also done on location.

Along with the bragging rights of a town or business getting to say Safe Haven or Iron Man 3 shot nearby, crews sometimes leave things better than what they were before filming.

Filming for the movie Tammy, which stars Melissa McCarthy, has wrapped up shooting at the restaurant Two Fat Ladies Over a Simmering Pot on Dawson Street in Wilmington. Workers with Acme Cleaning Service spent part of the day at the restaurant restoring the place to normal Wednesday.

"We normally clean a set before they film and after they film," said Pam McGeehan, owner of Acme Cleaning Service. "We clean up any messes that were made. So people can get ready to bring furniture back in and get back to normal business."

Hollywood production takes over Boiling Spring Lakes

For the past two weeks, Spring Lake Park has been closed to the public while crews build a temporary set for the filming of Tammy.

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WECT) - A major Hollywood production is taking over the city of Boiling Spring Lakes.

For the past two weeks, Spring Lake Park has been closed to the public while crews build a temporary set for the filming.

Starting Monday, Adobe Productions Inc. will be shooting several scenes for the hit film Tammy starring Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, and Dan Aykroyd.

The park has been transformed into Crawford's Beach Boat and Jet Ski Rental Office, because the script calls for a few summer scenes.

The park will remain closed as film crews plan to shoot on Monday May 21 and Tuesday May 22, weather permitting.

Drivers should be aware of a road closure on Juniper Road between Pine Road and Ash Road on Monday and Tuesday.

The production company has also hired three BSL Police officers who will work on Monday and Tuesday from 6 a.m. -8 p.m. to control traffic and monitor crowds.
