Agents find marijuana plants by intracoastal waterway

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Two marijuana plants were found growing near the intracoastal waterway by Brunswick County Vice Narcotics agents recently.

Michael Edwards Elks, 43, of 2413 Calvert Street in Supply, was charged with manufacturing marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Sgt. April Stanley of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

California man arrested in Oak Island for marijuana, Hashish possession

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — A California man was arrested in Brunswick County after agents searched an Oak Island residence and found marijuana and Hashish.

Seamus Stanley Etheridge, 30, of Goleta, California, was charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Sgt. April Stanley of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Agents reportedly seized 83 grams of marijuana, one gram of Hashish, smoking devices and plastic bags.

Some students in Brunswick County to study STEM initiative

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Students at Brunswick County Early College High School are back at school this morning, with one group of students blazing a new trail of study.

Freshman who are attending the high school this year are taking part in a new project called the STEM initiative.  STEM stands for "science, technology, engineering and math."  Students who participate in this initiative are given the opportunity to identify a global issue that has an effect locally.  They develop an engineering process as a solution.

The project will take place over the school year and integrate biotechnology and agriscience principles.  This project came about from the Race to the Top funding awarded to the state Department of Public Instruction.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport will host a community blood drive on Monday, August 8 from 1:30 until 6 p.m.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Do you have photos of Brunswick County’s beaches, shots of beautiful sunrises, or pictures of breathtaking sites around the area? We want to see them…and we may even publish them in our 2012 calendar.

WECT is looking for 12 photos that will fill the 2012 WECT Collector’s Calendar. Each winner will receive $100 for their picture and will be featured in the calendar.

Entries are being accepted until Sunday, August 21 and only two entries per individual are allowed.

Submissions must be mailed to WECT 2012 Collectors Calendar Contest at 322 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, NC 28412 or dropped off at the front desk during normal business hours.

Teachers may apply for Bright Ideas education grant now

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Bright Ideas education grant program is accepting applications and is offering a $500 Visa gift card for “early bird” educators.

The program awards funds to teachers in North Carolina for innovative classroom-based projects, according to a news release. North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives earmarked more than $590,000 to distribute to teachers this coming school year.

The final deadline to apply for a grant is in September, but educators who apply by the Aug. 15 “early bird” deadline will be entered into a drawing for a $500 Visa gift card.

Certified teachers in K-12 classrooms are eligible to apply for Bright Ideas grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.

Brunswick Co. Dixie Boys earn World Series title

The Brunswick County Dixie Boys baseball team finished the World Series with an undefeated record, winning the Championship after a 17-7 win over Louisiana.

Chris Graham hit for the cycle in the win, it was his two-run homerun that gave the team an early 3-0 lead. 

Louisiana trimmed the lead to 5-4 before Brunswick county took the lead for good.  Kevon Perkins home run sparked a five-run fourth inning which put the game out of reach.

Shelton Perkins was the winning pitcher.

The Brunswick County Dixie Junior boys came up short in their bid to win a World Series title.  Brunswick county fell 8-3 to Louisiana and will come home as the national runners-up.

Because Brunswick County had a previous loss in the double-elimination tournament the team needed to win two games to win the title.  Louisiana finished the Series with an undefeated record.
