Kathaleen Porter has stage four liver disease and must take several medications.  She admits that at times her medicine can make her less aware, but says that does not make her a bad parent.  Porter said the Department of Social Services has taken official custody of her two children saying she is not fit be a parent because of her illness.

DSS learned of the Porter family living conditions when Porter's estranged husband showed up at their home in violation of a protective order June 2, 2011, according to court documents.

Maritime Museum makes last minute preps

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - The Maritime Museum at Southport is making some last minute preps for its re-grand opening.

WECT crews stopped by Thursday as the team put on some final touches to the museum.

The staff lost two prized propellers just a couple weeks ago to some thieves, but with the help of local law enforcement, those have been returned.

Staff members say the fourth of July is the perfect time to reopen.

NC Supreme Court order allows traffic program to move forward in Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A decision from the North Carolina Supreme Court earlier this month clears the way for Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David to administer a traffic court program in his district.  The news of that order did not publicly come to light until Thursday.

DA David says he was aware of the decision, but did not tout it as he worked to clarify matters and work towards a solution.

The issue of a traffic program has been a source of controversy for months.

In April, Judge Jerry Jolly issued an order to stop the proposed program of an administrative traffic court along with a program called StreetSafe.  Jolly balked at the fact that the administrator of StreetSafe contributed to David's campaign.  David asked for Jolly to reconsider.  When he didn't, David chose to challenge the order in court.
