Chamber of Commerce honors local teacher

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce Education Committee recognized a dedicated teacher recently by giving her a beach chair.

The Chamber reportedly worked with school officials and fellow teachers to select one teacher in each of the nine schools in the area. The teacher selected from Southport Elementary School was Rae Ehling.

Ehling teaches exceptional children at the school. Congratulations, Ms. Ehling!

Students build robots to enhance team building skills

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Nearly 50 students are back in the classroom this week as part of a robot building summer camp.

Lincoln and Supply Elementary Schools are hosting the first “Robots and Beyond” summer camp this week.  The program is designed to sharpen problem-solving skills, demonstrate creativity and teach students to work in teams.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – People across the nation will join hands Saturday to raise awareness about the protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries.

Hands Across the Sand is an organization aimed to change our energy policy away from its dependence on fossil fuels and into clean energy.

They are inviting people all over the world to join hands on beaches, in parks and cities to unite against the dangers offshore drilling presents to our oceans and marine wildlife.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce Education Committee recognized a Brunswick County Early College High School teacher recently for his dedication to the school system.

The Chamber reportedly worked with school officials and fellow teachers to select one teacher from each of the nine schools in its service area. The teacher selected from Brunswick Early College was Harris Muhlstein.

Five directors retire from Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce will retire five directors from its 15-member Board after serving a three-year term.

Karen Taylor also recently passed the presidential gavel to Dennis Coffey, according to the Executive Vice President, Karen Sphar.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce presents four awards annually--the Ambassador of the Year, the President's Award, the Small Business Customer Service Award and the Small Business of the Year award.

The winners were presented during the 36th annual Membership Meeting held Thursday, June 16 at the Southport Community Building.
