Brunswick Co. Fire Marshal says smoke is from Dare Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Brunswick County Emergency Services Fire Marshal Scott Garner announced that the heavy smoke that much of Brunswick County is experiencing is due to drift smoke from the Pain’s Bay Fire in Dare County.

As of 10 a.m. on Monday, there were no known wildfires or controlled burns in Brunswick County.

The Dare County fire has burned approximately 45,000 acres, according to Garner. He also stated that weather conditions overnight created an inversion and with the prevailing wind direction, the smoke has traveled to Brunswick County.

Robert Ruark Inn is open in Southport

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at the Robert Ruark Inn recently.

The ribbon cutting kicked off an open house, which honored the renovation work of the late Jeff Ward. The Robert Ruark Inn is reportedly a four-room bed and breakfast inn, located at 119 Lord Street in Southport.

Southport Police arrest SC fugitive

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Officers with the Southport Police Department arrested a wanted fugitive from South Carolina over the weekend.

According to Police Chief Jerry Dove, officers noticed an unfamiliar man who appeared to be homeless hanging around Southport.  An officer identified the man as Larry Joseph Moore, 35, of the Myrtle Beach area. The officer ran a warrant check.

It turned out Moore was wanted in South Carolina for felony fraud charges.

License check point yields several drug related arrests

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A license check point on US 17 at the North/South Carolina state line yielded several drug related arrests.

According to Sgt. April Stanley with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, 55-year-old Kirk Jerome Galloway of Cary was arrested during the check point for trafficking cocaine by possessing, manufacturing and transporting it.

Deputies seized 29 grams of cocaine, 22 grams of marijuana, $808 in cash, a BMW, and various drug paraphernalia, including plastic baggies, scales and rolling papers.

Oak Island man builds his own motorcycles

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) — Since he was 15, Bob Correll has always wanted a motorcycle. That's why last winter, he built his own.

Using a few plans he found online, a old used Schwinn bicycle, and a motor from Harbor Freight, Correll built a working motorbike.

More than riding, Correll enjoyed just building the motorbike. "If I bought one, I'd miss all the fun of putting it together," Correll added.

He plans to build a second motorbike this fall.

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet Monday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will have a regular meeting on Monday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Planned discussions include the Jessie & Meyers Construction contract worth $6,226, a laptop donation and funding for schools.

The hearing will take place in the Commissioner’s Chambers inside the David R. Sandifer Building at the County Government Complex near Bolivia.

The purpose of the hearing is to receive comment from the citizenry of Brunswick County on the proposed budget.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Karen Sphar, the Executive Vice President of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce, shared photos from the Shop to the Beat event held Thursday, June 2 in the Southport Shopping District.

The next Shop to the Beat event will be held on June 16 from 4-6 p.m.
