The Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) from Brunswick County Early College High School took part in a life-like disaster drill Friday.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) from Brunswick County Early College High School took part in a life-like disaster drill Friday.

Students were challenged to respond to a disaster scenario created by EMS supervisors. CERT members didn't know specifics of the drill before the event so they had to think of their feet.

All students have been trained in the basics of disaster preparedness, including fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

This is the third year CERT members have participated in the disaster drill. In the past, students have been challenged with tornadoes, collapsed buildings, and missing persons.

On Saturday, the students were challenged with a post-tornado drill including a collapsed building on the campus of Brunswick Community College.

The line for
patients began as early as midnight the night before for the opportunity to
receive free dental services.

or cleaning and in turn, donated more than $50,000 in free dental care.

This year, organizers expect they will serve more than 180 patients.

Dr. Aaron

Town leaders plan for new exit road

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) –
Leaders in Southport are looking at ways to keep you safe behind the
wheel.  They want to build a new road to
help break up traffic on the outskirts of town.
Officials are looking to build the extended road on Highway 133 between
Jabbertown Road and Rob Gandy Road.

Right now, there's only
one way to get in or out of the City of Southport.  During the busy times, drivers can find
themselves stuck in traffic from St. James all the way to downtown Southport
near the waterfront.

Mayor Pro-Tem Mary Ellen
Poole says a change is needed quickly.

"There's limited ways
to leave the area," said Poole.  "We're
concerned about it for traffic control as well as emergency situations and
disasters."
