BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman was sentenced in court Wednesday to more than two years in prison after drinking, driving and then crashing into a man in Southport and killing him last year.
According to a spokesperson for District Attorney Jon David, Melissa Gail Gomez pleaded guilty to felony death by motor vehicle and driving while impaired. She was sentenced to 31-47 months in prison.
Gomez, who had a prior DWI conviction from 2007, was charged after consuming alcohol with friends July 27, 2012. That night, Gomez was driving home, going about 45 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone along Seapines Drive in Southport.
It was then that Gomez struck Oscar Rayvon Correll, Jr., who had been walking down the street looking for his dog. He was killed on impact.
