Winnabow man tells police he started drinking moonshine after ATV wreck

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An accident Sunday night involving two all terrain vehicles left one person in the hospital and another in jail.

Dennis Koch, of Winnabow, was driving an ATV when he rear ended another ATV on Sycamore Road in Boiling Spring Lakes, according to police reports.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found one ATV rolled over and EMS already working on a patient in the road. Koch was seen staggering in the road picking up beer cans, the report said. He told officers at the scene that he was a passenger on the ATV and was not driving.

Koch refused medical treatment and stopped answering any other questions from law enforcement. Police continued their investigation at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where the driver of the second ATV told them that Koch was the driver and that he had seen Koch drinking all day.

When officers went to Koch’s house, he told them that he had a few beers before the accident and started drinking moonshine after the accident. Officers arrested Koch and transported him to the Brunswick County Jail.

Koch was charged with DWI and felony injury by motor vehicle.
