OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The Town of Oak Island has been preparing for months to switch its services over to the county, but the town could be cutting it close.
Right now, the town is down to only four dispatchers. If another person leaves, leaders will be forced to make the switch before the deadline of October 1.
Oak Island is the last town in Brunswick County to hand over its 911 services.
The county recently received a $2.1 million grant to build a new 911 center because they are taking over 911 operations for Oak Island.
Emergency services director Anthony Marzano said the building will be constructed to withstand a category 5 hurricane and other disasters.
