65% of Brunswick Co. voters support marriage amendment

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The North Carolina constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman passed with 61% of voters being in favor of the amendment.

In all, only seven counties in the state voted to oppose the amendment. Those were: Wake, Orange, Durham, Chatham, Mecklenburg, Buncombe and Watauga.

Four out of the five counties in the WECT viewing area voted overwhelmingly in favor of the amendment. Brunswick County was above the state-wide average with 65% of voters in favor of the constitutional amendment.

The constitutional amendment reads, "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."

Businessmen trade their boots for heels

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – "Brunswick businessmen...trading in their boots for heels!" is the theme of the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce fundraiser, Womanless Beauty Pageant. The presenting sponsor is Brunswick Community College’s South Brunswick Islands Center.

This event is June 7 at 6:30 p.m. and will be located at South Brunswick Islands Center, 9400 Ocean Highway 17 West in Carolina Shores.

Table Sponsors are available for $350, which includes a table of eight, special seating, dinner and signage. Tickets are $25 each, which includes dinner, and there will be a cash bar. You can purchase your tickets at the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, located at 4948 Main Street in Shallotte.

Be sure to bring cash to vote for your favorite contestant! Votes are $5 each.

Jessie Mae Monroe student art show is a must see

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Mark your calendars! The 9th annual Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary student art show will take place Monday, April 23, 2012 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. 

Enjoy the beautiful artwork of students at Jessie Mae Monroe as you take a gallery walk through the school. The show starts at 5:30 p.m. in the media center with a brief introduction by art teacher Theresa Reiter. Throughout the floating event refreshments, which include a chocolate fountain, will be available for all to enjoy.

A special feature at this year's show is the commitment by the students to "go green" by using recycled materials in 2 and 3 dimensional pieces.  In preparing for the show students studied pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein which provided a great deal of inspiration for their work.

The show is open to the public and is truly an exhibition of the talent of Brunswick County students and the commitment of outstanding teachers!

Family event to be held for environmental awareness

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An event to raise environmental awareness will be held at Oak Island’s Middleton Park playground area Friday, April 20 according to a press release.

There will be music, crafts and other family-oriented activities at the event, and Curious George will make an appearance.

The event is scheduled to be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The park is located off of Southeast 46th Street.

Charity softball game to be held

Charity softball game to be held

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – According to a press release, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Oak Island Fire Department, the Brunswick Slammers, and Winding River’s men’s softball team, along with Roger's State Farm Relay for Life Team (known as The Good Neighbors) will be hosting a softball game Friday, April 20, with proceeds going towards the Brunswick County’s Relay for Life.

The Winding River team will play the Brunswick Slammers, and the sheriff’s department will be playing against the fire department.

Admission is $5, and there will be food, raffle items and more.

Children 10 years old and under will be admitted for free, along with cancer survivors.

Donations will also be welcome to benefit the American Cancer Society, the organization through which The Relay for Life event is sponsored.

The event will be held at 1 p.m. at Cedar Grove Middle School’s ballpark.

Chili Cook-Off held in Southport

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Many in Southport started off their Saturday with a little kick, where the annual Southport Chili Cook-Off was held in Franklin Square Park.

Festival goers enjoyed arts and crafts, live music, and chili.

Spirits were high as many from the community came together to showcase their best chili. The competition was on between businesses, but everyone enjoyed sharing a few secrets.

The Southport Sail and Boat Club came in first place with their boathouse chili. Jamaican Jerk came in second, and the women of Trinity United Methodist Church came in third.

Spring festival to be held Saturday

Spring festival to be held Saturday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Sunset Harbor Charitable Association, a non-profit group, will be hosting its first annual spring festival Saturday, according to a press release from the group.

The event will offer a variety of family-oriented activities including games, a dunk toss, face painting, food and more.

The Easter Bunny is scheduled to make an appearance at noon.

The event will be held at the Brunswick County Fishing Club from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All proceeds will go to help the community and other non-profit groups.
