Detectives investigate armed robbery at a sweepstakes cafe

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are searching for people they believe are responsible for an armed robbery early Saturday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, two men went to the Gold Strike Internet Café Saturday morning around 1:30 demanding money from the employees.

They left the business with an undetermined amount of cash.

Authorities said the men were wearing heavy clothing and masks to conceal their identities.

Rain doesn't dampen spirits at Chamber networking event

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Despite the rain, members of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce came out and enjoyed the September Business Networking After Hours hosted by DL Bianchi Brickyard. 

DL Bianchi's Brickyard showcased their new outdoor living area complete with fresh pizzas on their brick pizza oven, hamburgers and hot dogs on the outdoor grill, and refreshments from a brick bar.

Unemployment up in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Unemployment is up in Brunswick County, according to statistics released Friday from the state.

The rate is up to 10.7% for August, compared to 10.4% in Brunswick in July.

Statewide, the unemployment rate is 10.4%.

Brunswick Co. residents eligible for appliance rebate program

Brunswick Co. residents eligible for appliance rebate program

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Residents in Brunswick County are eligible for an appliance rebate through the North Carolina Energy Office’s Appliance Replacement Program.

Up to $1.4 million is available in rebates to residents who purchase qualified Energy Star refrigerators, freezers or washing machines.

The program, designed to assist Hurricane Irene victims replace old or damaged appliances, will provide rebates of $200 for an E-Star freezer or dishwasher, $300 towards a new washer, $500 on any E-Star refrigerator and more.

Maritime Museum in Southport to close Thursday, Friday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 25 and Friday, Aug. 26, according to a news release.
