Watch graduation ceremonies online

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Graduation is a day of celebration! But not everyone will be able to watch their family members and friends receive their coveted diplomas after four years of hard work.

As we reported earlier this month, many parents and students from Brunswick County were upset over limited graduation tickets.

However, the Brunswick County School System will provide a live video stream of each commencement ceremony this Saturday.

300,000 kids at risk of going hungry now that school's out

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Nearly 300,000 children are at risk of going hungry during the summer months in central and eastern North Carolina.

These students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, which keeps food in their bellies while school is in session.

However, during summer break, many children don't know where they'll get their next meal.

There are efforts underway to make sure little ones don't go hungry this summer.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is running a program called "Stop Summer Hunger."

Jeff Rose, the executive director of the Wilmington branch of the organization, said the Food Bank serves needy in the 34 counties, including New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick and Columbus counties.

He said during the summer months, when the need increases, donations tend to drop.

He's hoping to keep that from happening this summer.

Unique routine marks the end of school year...

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - It only happens for 3 hours once every year.  If you aren't in the right place at the right time you will miss it. It sounds like a steady rumble of thunder and is a powerful visual reminder that our school year has come to an end.

What is this special event?  The afternoon school buses come home for the summer.

The annual parade of buses begins around 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 10 after all students have been safely delivered home to start their summer vacations.  Throughout the afternoon 188 yellow school buses will return to the bus garage to be checked in for summer maintenance.
