Students turn knack for public speaking into college cash

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 41st annual Odell and Virginia Williamson Oratory Scholarship Competition was held at Brunswick Community College on Thursday, May 3, 2012. Eight seniors representing North Brunswick, South Brunswick, West Brunswick, and Early College High School competed for top honors. 

Congratulations to Christina Marie Tolley, SBHS and James Daniel White, ECHS! Tolley and White both walked away with $2,500 scholarships and engraved plaques! Presenting the awards were Michael and Heather Borton of the Williamson family. All 8 participants advancing from the school competition to the county competition received an attractive framed certificate and check for $100.00.

The following students competed in the county competition:

  • Erin Brooke Phelps (ECHS)--"Retaining the Resurrection"

  • Kenneth Casey Shadid (SBHS)--"Abused by Alcohol"
  • Megan Elayne Mauldin (WBHS)--"Filling in the Blanks: What School Really Teaches"
  • Jacob Hamilton Hill (WBHS)--"Capacity for Evil"

Serving as Master of Ceremonies was Mike Sapp, Director of the Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College and a theatre professional. 

Judges included Donald Byrum, former Director of the School of Art and Design at Wichita State University and Brunswick Arts Council Board Member; Dr. David Corley, retired secondary director and principal for Brunswick County Schools; Tiffany Fullwood, Assistant Clerk of Superior Court for Brunswick County; MaryAnn Nunnally, retired principal and former New Hanover County Board of Education member; and Dr. Edward Pruden, Superintendent of Brunswick County Schools.

Commissioners to hear from Bolivia Elementary third grade students

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Civic responsibility and advocacy are important skills Bolivia Elementary third grade students will demonstrate as they present a recycling proposal to the Brunswick County Commissioners during their regular scheduled meeting Monday, May 21, 2012.

Students in April Trull's third grade class have been studying natural resources and our impact on the depletion of these valuable resources. Students plan to request Commissioners consider offering curbside recycling and the possibility of more recycling drop-sites. 

In order to present at the meeting, students submitted their request in writing, as would any citizen who had an item of business. Students learned last week their presentation request was accepted. 

Brunswick County Commissioner meetings are held in the  David R. Sandifer Administration Building, at the Brunswick County Government Center.  Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m.

Nearly $130K awarded to six Brunswick Co. fire departments

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Over $8 million was awarded to over 600 fire departments across the state recently through the 2012 Volunteer Fire Department Fund.

The Fund was created in 1988 to provide dollar-for-dollar matching grants to assist volunteer fire departments, according to a news release from Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshall Wayne Goodwin. A total of $8,717,495.18 was awarded to 644 departments and some of that money is going to Brunswick County. Here’s the list of local grants:

  • N.W. Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department, Inc., $24,775.97
  • Navassa Volunteer Fire Department, $30,000
  • Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., $11,810.75
  • Sunset Harbor and Zion Hill Vol. Fire Department, Inc., $14,105
  • Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., $30,000
  • Yaupon Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., $19,151.67

“I’m proud that so many fire departments are taking advantage of this important grant program. These grants help our volunteer fire departments stretch their budgets to better serve our communities,” stated Goodwin in a news release.

Church ‘Sleep Out’ invites folks to understand hardships of homelessness

Church ‘Sleep Out’ invites folks to understand hardships of homelessness

SUPPLY, NC (WECT) – A local church will be giving people the chance to try to understand what it is like to be homeless soon.

According to a press release from Rev. Donna Phelps, Building Hope Ministries will be hosting Sleep Out for the Homeless from 10 a.m. to 8 a.m. starting Saturday, May 19, with the goal to raise awareness about area homelessness.

Participants will reflect on and discuss the problem with one another, and a $20 donation will be taken to help fund the Interfaith Nights Sheltering Network Program in the winter.

Cardboard will be given out for makeshift shelters, and unlike the homeless, portable toilets will be onsite, along with food and bottled water.

Southport falls short of 'People's Choice' award by 4 votes

Southport falls short of 'People's Choice' award by 4 votes

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Southport has been selected as the runner-up in a “People’s Choice” competition of the most popular downtown areas in North Carolina.

Representatives from the NC Chapter of the American Planning Association will be in the area Thursday to announce the recognition.

According to a press release, Southport was initially selected as one of six finalists for the award. The town lost to Mount Airy by only four votes.

The "People's Choice" competition was part of the Great Places initiative sponsored by the American Planning Association's North Carolina chapter.
