SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Tens of thousands of prayer events are scheduled today in honor of National Prayer Day.
Congressman Mike McIntyre was in Southport Thursday morning to deliver keynote remarks at the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Prayer breakfast.
President Harry Truman established the day of prayer in 1952. In 1988, Congress declared it would be held the first Thursday of May each year.
President Obama signed this year’s Presidential Proclamation May 1 to officially recognize May 3 as the 61st Annual National Day of Prayer.
In his proclamation, he calls upon the nation to “be humble in our convictions, and courageous in our virtue. Let us pray for those who are suffering around the world, and let us be open to opportunities to ease that suffering.”
Shirley Dobson, who chairs the National Day of Prayer Task Force, says this year's theme echoes a Bible verse from Psalms: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."
