BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Luck was in one Southport man’s favor recently -- he became $100,000 richer, before taxes, after winning a MONOPOLY scratch-off game.
Monday, retired animal control officer Clayton B. Cameron bought $5 MONOPOLY tickets at the Doodles convenience store on Country Club Drive in Oak Island, an N.C. Education Lottery spokesperson reports.
He then placed an order for a meal at a local restaurant, and while waiting, sat in his van and scratched off what turned out to be a winning ticket.
“I was shocked,” said Cameron. “I looked at it a thousand times and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I was scared to leave it in the van. I was scared to take it in the restaurant.”
Cameron ended up eating at the diner where he ordered his meal, then drove three hours to Sanford, NC to tell his daughter Christine about his big win.
They both collected his check Tuesday morning, worth $68,001 after taxes.
With his new earnings, Cameron says he plans to pay off his van, go to the mountains, give some of the money to his daughters and put the rest in the bank.
