PROTEST: Locals want fishing piers regulated to cut down on crime
OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – Some picketers in Oak Island pointed out a problem with fishing piers on Tuesday morning.
A group of local women protested the public piers, saying they are nothing but trouble.
A pier located at Yacht and Oak Island Drive is at the center of a lawsuit between the town and the Barris family, who live right next door.
Currently, the pier is open 24-hours-a-day, but locals said other towns set time limits on piers in order to control crime.
"At sundown, the entrances were chained off. But here they're not," said Phyllis Riley. "It's a playground that leads to drug sources and the kids to drink beer and so forth and so on."
A police report showed that kind of activity just this month.
Carol Barris, who is involved in the pending litigation with the town regarding these piers, was allegedly attacked by a woman who was drinking on the pier.
