Don't miss the first annual "Cougar Pride" golf tournament at Carolina National Golf Club this Saturday, May 18.

This mega-tournament will equally benefit the South Brunswick High School Athletic Booster Club, Band Booster Club, and scholarships given our by the Parent Action Committee.

Teachers of the year celebrated

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Schools throughout Brunswick County celebrated the announcement of their 2013-14 Teachers of the Year Monday morning!

Teachers of the Year were nominated by their peers and then selected by a team comprised of a community leader, retired educator, and employee from another school within the system. Candidates were observed in their classrooms by the team and then participated in an interview.

Teachers now have the opportunity to participate in the county Teacher of Year process. All school based Teachers of the Year will be celebrated and the county winner will be announced Friday, September 6, 2013 at a special red carpet event.

Secondary schools in Brunswick Co. to begin first for 2013-14 school year

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A spokesperson for the Brunswick County Board of Education announced Tuesday night that for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year, secondary schools will begin first, and elementary schools will begin second.

The decision came after input from the community and a discussion at the board's regularly-called meeting.

The following is a summary of the school start times:

South Brunswick High School teacher selected as Kenan Fellow

South Brunswick High School teacher selected as Kenan Fellow

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NC (WECT) – South Brunswick High School career and technical education teacher, Beke Lindsay has been selected as a 2013-14 Kenan Fellow. Lindsay is the first Kenan Fellow named from Brunswick County.

Lindsay competed against 230 other candidates to earn the fellowship. She will join an elite group of 48 educators selected from systems throughout North Carolina.

Community college transfer requirements could change in NC

For the first time in 15 years, transfer requirements from a community college to a university could be close to changing.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - For the first time in 15 years, transfer requirements from a community college to a university could be close to changing.

"We've heard too many stories for too many years about students transferring, then finding out they have to repeat a course they thought they have already taken at community college," said Dr. Sharon Morrissey, the Executive Vice President for Programs of the North Carolina Community College System. "We hear over and over their courses transfer as an elected credit, but not a course credit."

Currently, if community college students complete what's called 44 guarantee hours, all of their classes will transfer. But many of those credits are counted as electives at a university.

Elementary Science Olympiad debuts in Brunswick County

Brunswick County Schools is proud to host the inaugural Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament on Saturday, May 4th at Cedar Grove Middle School.

The following elementary schools are participating: Bolivia, Southport, Supply, Town Creek, Union, Virginia Williamson, and Waccamaw. This is an exciting opportunity to support our students with STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) education.

"We are thrilled to host the Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament in Brunswick County. In the past, three of our schools traveled to New Hanover County to compete. The New Hanover tournament started to reach capacity, thus inspiring us to start our own! We are proud of the commitment of our students and staff who are participating. The fun begins at 8:30 a.m. with the awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m.

Students to respond to disaster in life-like drill

Students to respond to disaster in life-like drill

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) from Brunswick County Early College High School will participate in a life-like disaster drill Friday.

EMS supervisors will create a disaster scenario to which the students must respond. CERT members will not know the specifics of the drill before the event.

All students have been trained in the basics of disaster preparedness, including fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

This is the third year CERT members will participate in the disaster drill. In the past, students have been challenged with tornadoes, collapsed buildings, and missing persons.

The drill will take place Friday on the campus of BCC, 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Students will meet with EMS after the drill to debrief.
