'Safe Haven' to film reshoots, ferry to run on abbreviated schedule

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry will run on an abbreviated schedule November 17 to accommodate reshoots for the film Safe Haven.

According to the Department of Transportation, the amended schedule will last until 2:30 p.m. and includes:

  • Departing Southport at: 5:30 a.m., 7, 8:30, 10, 11:30 and 1 p.m.; and
  • Departing Fort Fisher at: 6:15 a.m., 7:45, 9:15, 10:45, 12:15 p.m. and 1:45.

After 2:30 p.m., the normal winter schedule will resume. Commuters are asked to plan ahead for schedule changes November 17.

Safe Halloween fun in Oak Island

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Head to the Middleton Park Soccer Field Friday night to take part in a fun Halloween event in Oak Island.

Admission to the event is free and will be held inside the Oak Island Recreation Center if it rains.

The event will take place Friday and is sponsored by the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department.

Free outdoor program for youth this weekend

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Law Enforcement Officers Association is hosting a free youth outdoors day for Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

According to a flyer, youth ages 8-16 are invited to take part in a day of fishing, marksmanship, archery, displays of bomb disposals and more.

The goal is to allow all participants an opportunity to experience outdoor activities in a safe and educational way.

Each participant must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

The Youth Outdoors Day will take place Sunday, October 14, 1-5 p.m. at 5301 Holly Shelter Road. Contact Dan Higgins for more information (910) 279-0956.

'Fall into Song' concert this Sunday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A fall concert will take place Sunday at Calabash Presbyterian Church.

The South Brunswick Interchurch Council's Annual Fall Concert presents "Fall into Song." The concert will feature church choirs, church groups and area talent.

Attendees are requested to bring non-perishable food items for the food pantry.

The concert will take place Sunday, Sept. 30, 3-5 p.m.

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Southport Beat will transform the evening in Southport to a festive and exciting atmosphere on Friday, Sept. 21 from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. in Keziah and Franklin Square Parks. 

The goal of “Southport Beat” is to establish an evening of excitement and entertainment in Southport on a regular, ongoing basis. Southport Beat has a broad range of entertainment and music available for visitors and residents to enjoy.  

This month’s entertainment in Franklin Square Park will feature The Messengers, a bluegrass band; watercolor artist Jim McIntosh; corn toss with Jim & Honey and the Winding River Car Club.

Get rid of household hazardous waste, clothing

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A household hazardous waste and clothing collection, hosted by Brunswick County Solid Waste and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, will take place soon at South Brunswick Middle School.

According to a news release from the Belville Town Manager, it will be held Saturday in the bus parking lot, and is free for county residents and farmers. Proof of Brunswick County ID will be required.

Brunswick Co. to host Free Dump Week

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County is hosting the fall Free Dump Week at the landfill Sept. 10 through 15, according to a news release.

Residents may dispose of all materials except for regular household trash or new construction debris free of charge at the County Landfill in Bolivia.

Anyone driving a commercial vehicle or hauling commercial debris will be charged regular tipping fees, and convenience centers will maintain their regular tipping fees.
