Southport residents will get bigger recycling bins

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Recycling will soon become easier for residents in Southport. The town will now use roll-out carts for recycling.

According to a press release, the 96-gallon blue carts will be delivered this week, just in time for recycling pickups in December.

The larger-capacity carts will help with overflow issues from the smaller 18-gallon bins.

“This upgrade in our recycling program will make it easier for everyone to participate more fully in recycling,” said Southport city manager Pat Thomas.

A list the materials that can be accepted for recycling include:

  • glass food and beverage containers (clear, brown, and green)
  • aluminum beverage cans, clean aluminum foil and trays or food containers
  • metal (steel) food cans
  • newspapers
  • magazines
  • catalogs
  • junk mail
  • phone books
  • paper board boxes such as cereal and shoe boxes
  • corrugated cardboard (must fit in recycle cart)
  • all plastics numbers 1-7 (check bottom of container for number)

All containers that contained food or liquids must be rinsed out, and only recycling materials that fit within the containers will be picked up.

Solid waste fees will increase $1.45 a month to help pay for the new carts.
