Emergency response exercise to take place at Brunswick Nuclear Plant

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An exercise of emergency response plans for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant will be carried out Tuesday, according to a news release.

State and local emergency management officials will be on site in addition to Progress Energy officials.

The exercise, which is federally-graded, is conducted every two years.

Test sirens will not be sounded, and the public will not be asked to participate.

However, following the exercise, a public critique will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Progress Energy Visitors Center, which is located at 8520 River Road SE in Southport.

Myrtle Beach's Metropolitan Planning causes concerns for Brunswick Co. leaders

Myrtle Beach's Metropolitan Planning causes concerns for Brunswick Co. leaders

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Some Brunswick County leaders are concerned about the possibility of Myrtle Beach's Metropolitan Planning Organization reaching into North Carolina.

One of the biggest concerns, for some County Commissioners, is the lack of information they are getting from North Carolina.

"The problem is we're trying to get information from North Carolina," says Commissioner Marty Cooke, "That information doesn't seem to be as forthcoming. We'd like to have more clarity as far as what the overall perspective would be, so we could come up with a balanced perspective on the ultimate decision."

Cooke says the ultimate approval of transportation projects in some areas would go before the planning organization.

He wants to make sure Brunswick County is heard on projects in North Carolina.

Commissioners will discuss this at an upcoming meeting.

Sharing the beach with a gator!

Sharing the beach with a gator!

HOLDEN BEACH,NC(WECT)-A WECT viewer emailed this picture of an alligator in the surf at Holden Beach Wednesday morning.

"We spotted him this morning on the East end of the island.  He continues to slowly move Westward struggling in and out of the surf. Animal control tried to subdue him and his head popped up and he headed toward the water.  He appears to be injured on his tail," said Julie Metz Langley.

Julie visits Holden Beach every year from Charlotte. She stayed on the beach and watched somebody (we aren't sure if it was Animal Control Officials or State Wildlife Officers) get the alligator into a large tube and hoist it into a truck. They drove the alligator off the beach near the Holden Beach bridge.

Another viewer called the newsroom and said the alligator was spotted by a jogger around 6am, behind Captain Petes and Brunswick Lanes Realty on the beach.

No fishing license required on Independence Day

No fishing license required on Independence Day

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Grab some bait, a fishing rod, and throw out a line Wednesday in any public body of water in North Carolina for free.

July 4 is your one chance a year to get hooked on fishing at no cost. Everyone can fish in any public body of water, from mountain trout waters to coastal waters without buying a fishing license.

The State Wildlife Commission added more fish in waters across the state, including trout and channel catfish, to give people a better chance of reeling one in.

Even though the day is free, all other fishing regulations still apply – including size and creel limits.
