OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The Coastal Federation and the Town of Oak Island invite community members and volunteers to celebrate the coast with two oyster reef construction events at the Waterway Park in Oak Island.

According to a press release from the Town’s public works manager, the events will be held Wednesday, March 20 and Saturday, March 23, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Residents are invited to celebrate the beauty and productivity of the estuaries and coastal waters by helping to build two new oyster reefs.

The Town is in need of a lot of volunteers to place about 5,000 oyster shell and marl bags in the shallow water along the Park’s shoreline.

There will be a variety of tasks during the event that are suitable for varying degrees of physical ability.
