CIS is looking for volunteers to help with estate yard sale

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Communities in Schools is looking for volunteers to help sort and prepare items for an estate yard sale and acution next week. Money from the event will benefit students through programs in the schools provided by CIS.

The yard sale and auction will be held Saturday, April 6 at 4471 Rounding Run Road in Shallotte.

The Shallotte First Baptist Church youth group will be grilling hotdogs for lunch with proceeds going to their youth program.

Items for sale were donated from the Dixon Family, long time residents of the Shallotte Community. The Dixons volunteered in the schools for several years.

"The yard and auction sale will go a long way in helping CIS provide programs to students in the schools.  We have students on the waiting list but not ample funds to bring them into our programs," stated Cynthia Tart, CIS Executive Director.

What does it mean to be a better man?

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Every day young men and women filter the noise and clutter of today's world in search of fundamental truths.  Messages, both overt and subliminal inundate the senses and have the ability to shape thoughts and actions.  

The importance of countering negative influences surrounding our youth, particularly males, was writer and editor Kelly Harrington Johnson's call to action.

"A Better Man is my effort to share the kinds of stories boys want and need to hear: stories about right and wrong and courage and integrity and service," Johnson said.

Today, Johnson brings the power of these stories to Brunswick County. 

Selected students in all Brunswick County high schools will have the opportunity to meet and hear first-hand answers to the very important question, "What does it really mean to be a man?"

Papa John's gives back to Communities in Schools of Brunswick Co.

Papa John's gives back to Communities in Schools of Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Papa John’s located in Brunswick County are holding a fundraiser to support the students and families served by Communities in Schools of Brunswick County.

According to a press release, the Papa John’s located in Leland, Shallotte, Southport and Sunset Beach will donate 25% of the day’s sales of specific pizza specials from the first Wednesday of each month.

The next event will take place next Wednesday, April 3.

“At Papa John's Pizza, we firmly believe strong relationships that provide educational support yield advancement opportunities for our children,” said Papa John’s Director of Operations Jeremy Caudill in a press release.  “Through our fundraising partnership with CIS, we hope to raise money for an organization that does just that.”

When you order from Papa John’s April 3, be sure to ask how you can “make a difference in a Brunswick County student’s life.”

Sunset Beach to celebrate 50 years

Sunset Beach to celebrate 50 years

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Town of Sunset Beach will celebrate 50 years Tuesday.

According to a press release from town officials, more than 600 residents are expected to take part in the first event of a year-long celebration.

Congressman Mike McIntyre, former town officials and representatives of the Founder’s Family are also expected to be at the 50th Anniversary Reception.

The event will take place Tuesday night at 6:00 inside the Sea Trail Convention Center Ballroom.

Easter egg hunt scheduled at Bill Smith Park

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An Easter egg hunt will be held Saturday, March 30 at Bill Smith Park off of Fish Factory Road, according to a press release.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and is meant for children ages 10 and under.

The children will be divided by age group: 3 and under, 4-6, and 7-10.

Flip the switch in observance of Earth Hour this weekend

(WECT) - Don't forget to flip the switch in support of Earth Hour, which begins this weekend.

Earth Hour will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.  People and businesses worldwide will turn off their lights in order to conserve energy.

According to earthhour.org, Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Students visit ECU to participate in math event

Students visit ECU to participate in math event

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Dozens of fourth and fifth grade students from Virginia Williamson Elementary School went to ECU last week to participate in the North Carolina Council of Teachers and Mathematics.

According to the school, fourth grader Mikayla Watts received an honorable mention for her project on the stock market and entry into the state math fair.

Students prepared for the event by participating in an after school math and science club. Fifth grade teacher Tara Cumbee was their coach.
