Oak Island plans Easter egg hunt for the big kids too

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The Oak Island Parks & Recreation Department will host several Easter egg hunts this weekend.

According to a press released from the town, there will be a hunt for the adults Friday night at the Teen Center. The event is $5 per person and starts at 8:30 pm.

Teen and pre-teen hunts will take place at the Teen Center Saturday afternoon at 1:00.

Fire in the Lake: Learn more about fire safety

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Leaders in Boiling Spring Lakes is will host an event Saturday to educate the public about why controlled burning is important.

The event will also show ways to protect homes from a wildfire.

The event will take place at the Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition to fire safety, participants can listen to bluegrass music, watch fire jugglers and dancers, see a raptor show and more.

Gov. McCrory to be keynote speaker for WilmingtonBiz Conference and Expo

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – NC Governor Pat McCrory will be the keynote speaker at Thursday’s WilmingtonBiz Conference and Expo at the Wilmington Convention Center.

According to the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, WilmingtonBiz is the region’s largest business event and attracted more than 2,500 attendees last year.

The event includes a Keynote lunch, an Expo with more than 100 exhibitors and 20 free seminars on a range of timely business topics.

“WilmingtonBiz Expo brings together our region’s business community for a day of learning, making new connections and reconnecting with others,” said Rob Kaiser, publisher of the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, which produces the event.

The Keynote lunch is sold out with 750 attendees and more than 3,000 people are expected to come through the event Thursday.

The WilmingtonBiz Expo Hall will open immediately after the lunch and be open 1:30-7:00 p.m.

The event took place at 8 a.m. Wednesday, and a ribbon cutting was held.

Chowder Cook-Off Winners Announced

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The 3rd Annual N.C. 4th of July Festival Chowder Cook-Off was held Sunday, March 10th at the Oak Island Moose Lodge.  

The Cook-Off  is a fun community event which is held to raise funds for the annual N.C. 4th of July Festival,  Jennifer Moore, First Citizens Bank chaired the Cook-Off and was pleased with the show of support for the festival. 

Entertainment was provided by Lynda Snyder with door prizes donated by The Adventure Kayak Company, Cape Fear Fitness, Color Me Carolina, Cox Quality Furniture and Harold W. Wells & Son, Inc. 

The N.C. 4th of July Festival will be held July 2 - 4th in Southport with a special Beach Day on Oak Island July 1.

Part of Nash Street to close during training exercises

Part of Nash Street to close during training exercises

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A section of Nash Street in Southport will be closed this Friday and Saturday during training exercises for a disaster recovery group, according to a press release from the city.

The City of Southport said members of Baptists on Mission, a church group that offers assistance to victims of natural disasters, will be training in the 100 block of East Nash Street between Howe and Davis Streets.

The city is expected about 300 members of the group to receive the training that focuses on communications, home clean-up recovery and mass feeding to medical services, chaplaincy and laundry services.
