BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 2013 Spring Fling Tennis Tournament in Brunswick County is just around the corner.

According to Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, the adult tournament will be held Saturday, April 6 at Ocean Isle Beach Park, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain date 4/7/13).

The youth tournament will take place Saturday, April 20, also at Ocean Isle Beach Park.

Chowder Cook-Off March 10 will benefit NC 4th of July Festival

The N.C. 4th of July Festival’s 3rd Annual Chowder Cook Off will be held on Sunday, March 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oak Island Moose Lodge.

In addition to tasting 10 chowders, there will be a wine tasting by Silver Coast Winery, a baked goods sale, entertainment by “Lynda Snyder”, 50/50 raffle, Door Prizes, and cash bar.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Several area Papa John’s will soon be participating in a fundraiser to benefit Communities in Schools in Brunswick County, which is a nonprofit organization that encourages students in the community to stay in school. 

According to a news release from a CIS spokesperson, on the first Wednesday of each month, Papa John’s locations in Leland, Shallotte, Southport and Sunset Beach will donate 25 percent of the day’s sales of certain pizza specials to support programs and services that CIS provides.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Parents in Brunswick County can learn ways to prevent childhood obesity during a free seminar this weekend at the Brunswick Beacon Health Expo.

Terri Mozingo, a registered dietician with Brunswick Novant Medical Center, will present the seminar titled “Helping Parents Prevent Childhood Obesity.”

According to a press release from Brunswick Novatnt Medical Center, the childhood obesity rate in Brunswick County is between 15 and 20 percent. With one in three children in North Carolina aged 10 to 17 overweight or obese, our state and nation are facing a serious issue.

The seminar, which will be held at 10 a.m., is designed for any parent wishing to promote nutrition and a healthy lifestyle in their home.

The health expo will be held at West Brunswick High School Saturday, Feb. 23, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

CFCC offers business seminar for faith-based organizations

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Cape Fear Community College Small Business Center will offer a special seminar for owners and managers of faith-based organizations on Feb. 21 from 6 - 9 p.m.

According to Doug Tarble, coordinator of CFCC's Small Business Center, faith-based organizations are considered businesses and subject to their own unique set of rules and regulations. This seminar addresses the operational and regulatory issues often overlooked or commonly not understood by faith-based organization leaders and managers.

The program runs from 6 - 9 p.m. in room L-107 in the CFCC Health Sciences Building at the corner of Walnut and Second St.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Do you have any expired or unwanted medication left in your medicine cabinet that you want to get rid of? If so, you can drop it off soon in Brunswick County, through an event called Operation Medicine Cabinet at Dosher Memorial Hospital.

According to the county's website, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, you can drop off any prescription or non-prescription pills, liquids, needles, or pet medicine at the hospital.

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Folks in Southport are getting ready to celebrate the Valentine’s Day premiere of the movie Safe Haven

In January, leaders in Southport approved $14,500 for the movie premiere, as the movie was filmed locally and hundreds played roles in the film.
