BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County Schools received notice from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction approving the system's calendar waiver request. The request was submitted to the State Board of Education in accordance with policies outlined in G.S. 115C-84.2. Brunswick County Schools was granted a waiver of 5 instructional days for the 2012-13 school year.
Brunswick County has operated under a similar waiver this academic year. The waiver allows the system to convert the 5 additional student days into mandatory workdays to allow for professional development in the Common Core State Standards and Essential Standards. The waiver also allows the system flexibility if make-up days due to inclement weather are necessary. Under the adopted calendar, professional development days would be the first days utilized as make-up before considering holidays and weekends.
During its regular scheduled meeting March 6, 2012, the Brunswick County Board of Education approved a traditional school calendar and "Calendar Draft 3" contingent on the State Board of Education's approval of the waiver request. "Calendar Draft 3" maintains compliance with state calendar law and based on the waiver approval is now the official 2012-2013 Brunswick County Schools traditional calendar.
Printable copies of they system's calendars can be found on the new Brunswick County Schools website on the homepage under "Quick Links."
