Fire in the Lake: Learn more about fire safety

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Leaders in Boiling Spring Lakes is will host an event Saturday to educate the public about why controlled burning is important.

The event will also show ways to protect homes from a wildfire.

The event will take place at the Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition to fire safety, participants can listen to bluegrass music, watch fire jugglers and dancers, see a raptor show and more.

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Two groups are coming together to help feed hungry children in the Brunswick County Schools.

Shoreline Baptist Church in Southport is collecting non-perishable food items through the month of February.

Non-profit gets meals to children on weekends

Shallotte,NC(WECT)- A non-profit called Wings Ministry has started a new program to make sure children are getting enough to eat on the weekends.

Founder, Missy Settlemore noticed there was a need in the Brunswick County area and started a program called the Backpack program.

With help from the community and lots of volunteers, the program is now in 7 schools in Brunswick County and they currently serve 785 children each weekend.

The schools in the program now are Waccamaw School, Union Elementary, Supply Elementary, Virginia Williamson Elementary, Cedar Grove Middle, Shallotte Middle and For Kids Only.

SBMS holds family math night

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Family Math Night is a fun-filled time where parents and care-givers can experience hands-on math and learn from their child’s teachers. 

By participating in Family Math Night parents may serve as models of motivation, persistence and competency to their children, while at the same time learning new knowledge themselves or revising their previous knowledge about math. 

The night’s activities, presented by the SBMS math faculty and math interns, will include computer-based math programs to use at home, real-world math activities, and a short journey through algebra and geometry and other fun activities. 

Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and sessions will begin shortly after.

First of 3 Brunswick Co. school input sessions to take place Tuesday night

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The first of three area community focus groups is scheduled to meet Tuesday night.

According to a news release from a school spokesperson, the public is encouraged to give input on how Brunswick County Schools can support the educational needs of students at any of three different sessions.

Tuesday night’s meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at North Brunswick High School.

Wednesday, the meeting will be held at South Brunswick High School, and Thursday, it will be at West Brunswick High School. The later meetings will also be held at 6:30 p.m.

Brunswick Sheriff's Office mourns loss of one of their own

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A detective with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office died unexpectedly Monday, according to the sheriff's office.

Detective Kyle Jones, 41, was at home when he passed away. The sheriff's office said no foul play is suspected in his death.

Jones was a 19 year veteran of law enforcement. According to the sheriff's office, he served the citizens of Columbus County from 1994-2000, and served Brunswick County from 2000 until his death.

The sheriff's office posted Jones' passing on Facebook Monday night saying, "The BCSO has lost a friend and co-worker tonight and ask that you keep the Jones family and this office in your prayers."

No details regarding a memorial service have been released at this time.
