OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – A family ornament hunt will take place at Oak Island’s Teen Center Dec. 15, according to a town official.

The event, which starts at 8 p.m., is being hosted by the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department.   

Families will compete against each other to be the first to find all of their ornaments.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Head to Middleton Park Friday evening for an event designed to kick off the Christmas holiday.

Entertainment by an ensemble from the Sea Notes Choral Society will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by a tree lighting ceremony.

There will also be a special guest making an appearance after the lighting.

Santa Claus will be making calls to kids soon

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Remind your kids to be on their best behavior -- Santa Claus will be calling children 10 and under on one of two nights in early December, according to a news release from officials in Oak Island.

Santa will be calling via the Oak Island Santa Hotline. Parents can pick up forms at the recreation center to make sure he calls.

The forms must be returned by Dec. 3.

Oak Island’s tree lighting scheduled for Nov. 30

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – Oak Island will be getting into the Christmas spirit this year with its annual tree lighting, which will take place Friday, Nov. 30 at Middle Park, according to the town’s website.

The event will start at 6 p.m., though the Sea Notes Choral Society will be performing at 5:30 p.m.

Spaghetti fundraiser to benefit Oak Island Salty Dog Park

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – A spaghetti fundraiser will take place Saturday to benefit Oak Island Salty Dog Park, according to a news release from an event organizer.

The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Oak Island Recreation Center.

Those who attend can buy plates, which include spaghetti, salad, bread and dessert, for $7 ahead of time.

Save your Halloween candy wrappers for aquarium to recycle

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Halloween may be over, but the recycling process is an ongoing event, and officials at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher are encouraging local residents and students to help by collecting used candy wrappers to recycle.

According to a news release from an aquarium spokesperson, folks and students from classes around New Hanover and Brunswick counties are invited to participate with the wrapper recycling.

Anyone is welcome to contribute, but any participating class with the most candy wrappers by weight to the aquarium Dec. 1 will win a free outreach program with a live animal presentation.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Head to the Middleton Park Soccer Field Friday night to take part in a fun Halloween event in Oak Island.

Admission to the event is free and will be held inside the Oak Island Recreation Center if it rains.

The event will take place Friday and is sponsored by the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department.
