Sessions scheduled for those interested in becoming foster, adoptive parents

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) –Training sessions will be held for those who want to be either foster or adoptive parents on Thursday evenings, starting Sept. 13, according to the Brunswick County Schools website.

The sessions will go through Nov. 15 and will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brunswick County Department of Social Services.

Free health exams to be offered soon

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Free health exams will be offered in Brunswick County, according to the county’s website.

They will be offered Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Brunswick County Health Department, which is located at 25 Courthouse Drive in Bolivia.

The following types of exams will be available:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The commissioners chambers in Brunswick County was packed Thursday as family and friends watched participants graduate from Jude Ola Lewis’ Treatment Court.

Several people from the drug court, mental health court and DWI court graduated from their respective program. This is the first graduation ceremony for the DWI court.

During the event, some people gave testimonies about how drug court has helped them stop doing weed, heroin and drinking.

Jim Blackburn was the guest speaker of the graduation. He was the lead prosecutor in the triple murder case of former Green Beret Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald.

He later went on to surrender his law license and enter guilty pleas to state charges. He served a three and one-half stint in state prison.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brunswick County Board of Education operates under a committee structure.  Prior to the monthly regular called meeting of the Board of Education, Board members chair and serve on a variety of committees. Committees include operations, curriculum, finance, human resources, and policy.

The purpose of the committees is to allow administration to present items for information, discussion, consideration, and action.  Many of the items discussed in committee are used to build the agenda for monthly Board of Education meetings.

OCEAN ISLE, NC (WECT)-The folks at the Museum of Coastal Carolina plan to celebrate the first anniversary of one of its residents.

"Irene", is Florida horse conch. It was found on August 27, 2011, just a few days after Hurricane Irene blew thru Southeastern, North Carolina.

According to staff members at the museum, Judy Sobota was walking along Ocean Isle Beach when she saw the conch stranded on the beach. Sobota borrowed a pail from a family on the beach and took it to the Museum of Coastal Carolina.

On August 29, 2011, volunteers at the museum's touch tank named the conch "Irene". A year later the conch is still alive in the touch tank.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southport Beat will transform the evening in Southport to a festive & exciting atmosphere on Friday, August 17th from 5pm-8pm in Keziah & Franklin Square Parks.   The goal of “Southport Beat” is to establish an evening of excitement and entertainment in Southport on a regular, on-going basis.   Southport Beat has a broad range of entertainment & music available for visitors and residents to enjoy.  

This month’s entertainment in Franklin Square Park will feature “Lenny Frank & Tommy Hutchinson Duo playing old rock & roll, beach music and country;  Watercolor artist Jim McIntosh;  Corn Toss with Jim & Honey and the Winding River Car Club.    Keziah Park will feature the progressive rock tunes of “Narrow Escape”;  Gracie & Tic Toc the Clowns & Games with Bob.

Dosher Memorial to host opening celebration for new location

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Dosher Memorial Hospital will host a grand opening celebration Thursday for its new medical clinic on Oak Island.

The event will be held at the Oak Island Clinic, located at 4700 E. Oak Island Drive, across from the Town Hall and Police Department, from 4-6 p.m.

There will be a ribbon cutting, followed by tours of the facility and an opportunity to meet the staff and talk with its medical professionals.
