Walk a dog before taking it home

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is moving forward with taking over the county’s Animal Services.

The sheriff’s office recently started to make some changes to the facility in an effort to get more animals adopted.

Trees were cleared out of an area to make way for a place for people to walk dogs around before deciding if they want to take them home.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said they are getting ready to paint the building and vehicles.

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – Oak Island will be hosting a farmer’s market starting June 11, according to a press release from a town spokesperson.

It will begin at 7 a.m. at the ball field behind town hall.

Those interested in participating are asked to visit town hall for vender applications.

The kitten in the video is about 6-weeks-old and has a few brothers and sisters available for adoption.

Taste test locally grown food, meet farmers

A group of businesses in downtown Wilmington will partner for a farmer meet and greet on Saturday, encouraging residents to buy localy grown food.

Owner and chef of Crow Hill, Derrick Cook, will prepare food from Down East Connect's farmers in The Daily Special truck at two locations in the area.

The first 150 people to come to each location will get free samples of the dishes.

The first stop on the Meet and Greet tour will be at Porter's Neck Yoga and Spa, 8044 Market St., from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

Brunswick County to host first annual walk to bring awareness to elder abuse

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Department of Social Services will be hosting its first walk to raise awareness about elder abuse Friday, according to a press release from DSS officials.

Called the Walk, Roll and Stroll & Resource Fair, it will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in front of the Social Services Building at the Brunswick County Complex.

The walk is part of Elder Abuse Awareness Month, which goes from May 11 to June 18.

People from all ages are invited to participate.

In 2006, the Cape Fear Elder Abuse Prevention Network was created, comprised of 25 agencies working in human services in law enforcement from Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender counties. The group’s goal is to educate senior adults, their families and the community about elder abuse and neglect, along with fraud and scam prevention and financial exploitation.

Smile, it's free! Dentists offer free checkups

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry and Dentistry From the Heart are teaming up Friday to offer free checkups for people living in Brunswick County.

Registration for the event began at 8:00 a.m. at the offices of Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry. Patients will be seen on a first come, first serve basis throughout the day.

According to a press release, the first 100 patients will receive treatment.

Bridge to Bridge Triathlon to take place Saturday

Bridge to Bridge Triathlon to take place Saturday

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The first annual Bridge to Bridge Triathlon will be held Saturday, June 2, according to a press release from an Oak Island official.

The sprint triathlon will kick off with a one-third of a mile swim in the water off of Oak Island.

Following the swim will be an 18-mile, one-lap bike ride on a course described as flat and fast, where riders will go across the Oak Island Bridge that opened in 2010. The biggest inclines on the trek will be over bridges.

After that will be a 4-mile out and back run to the end of the pier. Aid stations will also be set up at mile markers one, two and three to help keep participants hydrated.
