Church ‘Sleep Out’ invites folks to understand hardships of homelessness

SUPPLY, NC (WECT) – A local church will be giving people the chance to try to understand what it is like to be homeless soon.

According to a press release from Rev. Donna Phelps, Building Hope Ministries will be hosting Sleep Out for the Homeless from 10 a.m. to 8 a.m. starting Saturday, May 19, with the goal to raise awareness about area homelessness.

Participants will reflect on and discuss the problem with one another, and a $20 donation will be taken to help fund the Interfaith Nights Sheltering Network Program in the winter.

Cardboard will be given out for makeshift shelters, and unlike the homeless, portable toilets will be onsite, along with food and bottled water.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students in Brunswick County will be shelling out more cash for their lunch next school year.

A District spokesperson said the 10 cents increase is due to mandates from the Federal Healthy Hungry Free Kids Act.

The District will also have to provide fruit with every lunch, regardless of whether or not the students actually want it.

Lunches next year will cost students between $1.70 and $2.10, depending on the grade level.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Stingray Dads of Virginia Williamson Elementary School  will challenge the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office on the basketball court this Friday, April 27, 2012.

The epic battle will take place at Cedar Grove Middle School at 6:00 p.m.  There will be face painting, a concession stand, t-shirts, 50/50 raffle, and much, much more!  Don’t miss the half-time performance by VWES students and staff! All proceeds from the evening will benefit the American Cancer Society.

This year the VWES is “Team Angelina.”  Angelina is a second grade student battling cancer and has not been able to attend school this year.  Just last week, school staff received news that a third grade student has just been diagnosed with leukemia.  Both students are receiving treatment at Duke Children’s Hospital.

Please join VWES in this special fund-raising event for “LIFE.”
