Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration to be held at Government Center

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., a celebration will be taking place Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the Brunswick County Government Center, according to the county’s website.

It will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Chambers, in the David R. Sandifer County Administration Building.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Get your antiques examined at Southport appraisal fair

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – The 10th annual Antique Appraisal Fair, sponsored by the Southport chapter of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Education Organization), will take place at the Southport Community Center soon.

According to a news release from an event organizer, the fair will be held Sunday, Feb. 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Certified appraisers will be at the event to let folks know about the values of their hand-carried items.

BCC hosts 9/11 memorial ceremony

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A 9/11 memorial ceremony was held at Brunswick Community College Tuesday morning.

The ceremony was steeped in fire department tradition with a flag that was flown over Ground Zero during rescue and recovery operations on display.

A wreath laying ceremony took place with the ringing of the 5-5-5-5, signaling the line of duty death of a firefighter. Sounds from bagpipes and a singer filled the ceremony to set the mood.

Oak Island to create historical society

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) - The Town of Oak Island is excited to announce the formation of a historical society.

Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace said it's something that they've been talking about creating for quite some time.

The town wants to get a group of people together to try and contact as many people as possible to gather facts and memories.

Wallace said the possibilities of showcasing the history of the island are endless. She said one option they've been talking about is creating a book to reflect the history of the town.

The town will begin to create a committee for the society.

Wallace said applications will be available in the upcoming weeks if people would like to head up the effort.

Museum "springs into action" and hits the road

Museum "springs into action" and hits the road

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport is hoping people will "Spring Into History" with a daytrip to another part of the state.

The museum is offering to take people to the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh on Monday, April 23 from 9:00am to 6:00pm.

“We’ll enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum before we begin our exploration of the 20,000-square foot exhibit The Story of North Carolina,” said N.C. Maritime Museum Educator Lori Duppstadt in a news release Wednesday. “After looking at the exhibits, we’ll be treated to a potluck lunch by Museum of History volunteers.”

The trip includes bus fare, museum tour, lunch, refreshments and snacks for the trip home. Space is limited. Registration is $35 for museum members, $40 non-membersYou must register by Saturday, April 7.

Students to make history come to life

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Students at Southport Elementary will make history come to life Friday.

The school will present “A Famous American Wax Museum” in the cafeteria from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. 

According to a press release, third grade students will “become” famous individuals from all eras in history and make guest appearances.
