Board of Aldermen agree to restore a piece of Southport history

Board of Aldermen agree to restore a piece of Southport history

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Board of Aldermen in Southport agreed to let a citizen’s group buy and plant a new tree in the town’s Whittler’s Bench.

The tree is a part of the town's history that has been missing for several years. The bench, which is more than 100 years old, greets visitors as they approach the town’s waterfront.

According to Alderman Ken Karn, a hurricane destroyed the tree that was there several years ago. He said the town decided to approve a smaller tree than originally planned, so they can shape the tree as it grows.

Local schools participate in Plug In to Holiday Safety program

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation teamed up with the Electrical Safety Foundation International to distribute free copies of the new Plug In to Holiday Safety program to 150 elementary school classroom teachers in Brunswick and Columbus counties.

According to the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce, the objective of the program is to educate children in grades 3-5 about holiday fire prevention and electrical safety.

"The winter holiday season is traditionally a festive time of year when friends and family gather for celebrations," ESFI president Brett Brenner stated in the Chamber's newsletter. "Unfortunately, many of our favorite holiday traditions can also create fire and electrical safety hazards."

Each student is reportedly provided with a take-home sheet to help them share what they've learned about smoke alarms, portable space heaters and electrically-related fires.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Daylight saving time ends this weekend, which means we all will have an extra hour of sleep!

Don’t forget before you go to bed tonight to set all of your clocks, watches, microwaves and ovens back one hour. Most smart phones will adjust on their own at 2 a.m. on Sunday, so you don’t have to worry about them.

As you change your clocks, the local fire departments are reminding folks to also change the batteries in all smoke alarms.

David Hines, with the Wilmington Fire Department, provided the following tips to help ensure your family receives a life-saving warning if a fire starts in your home:
