Southern Comfort Homes shows off Parade of Homes entry in Bolivia

BOLIVIA, NC (WECT) — Southern Comfort Homes, Inc. in Bolivia is participating in the Wilmington Home Builders Spring Parade of Homes, May 21-22.

The Parade of Homes will showcase newly constructed homes in Brunswick and New Hanover counties and is free to the public.

Southern Comfort Homes’ entry is located at 1238 St. Simmons Drive in the Palmetto Creek of the Carolinas area of Bolivia. It will be open from noon until 5 p.m.

Brunswick County students are in for a sweet treat this week

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Students in Brunswick County are going to have a sweet treat with their lunches this week.

Fresh, local strawberries will be on the plates of thousands of students thanks to a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program that allows local growers to receive Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification.

According to a press release, one a grower receives GAP certification they can begin selling and distributing fresh produce to local school systems.

Billie and Katherine Ingram of Waccamaw River Farms in Ash are reportedly the only GAP growers in Brunswick County. They harvested their strawberries on May 1 and delivered them to the Brunswick County Schools Central Warehouse in the Government Complex.

The strawberries will be delivered to school cafeterias for the students to enjoy throughout the week.

It is a good idea to cover up or move delicate plants inside tonight if possible.

Plant sale in Brunswick County continues today

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Commissioners Office announced that there will be a plant sale at the Cooperative Extension Service Office Greenhouse, located at the Government Center (the back parking lot of Building N).

The sale started yesterday and will continue on this schedule:

  • Friday, April 8 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Second annual Fire in the Lakes Festival set

BOILING SPRING LAKES (WECT) - Fire plays a dominant role in maintaining the rich habitat of many rare plants and animals, like the Venus fly trap. The Second Annual Fire in the Lakes Festival will teach people about how fire is used to maintain the ecosystems and protect communities against large wildfires.

The event will take place March 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center in Brunswick County. During this free festival, there will be a controlled burn on-site, live bluegrass music by "Possum Creek," children's games, a scavenger hunt, fire equipment, Smokey Bear, fire clowns, jumping castles and food.
