WILMINGTON, NC (AP) - Authorities have charged a Southport woman with second-degree murder after the SUV she was driving struck and killed an amputee looking for a dog near his home.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported (http://bit.ly/QuDz4o ) that 38-year-old Melissa Gail Gomez was booked into the Brunswick County jail Thursday following her indictment in the July 27 death of 51-year-old Oscar Rayvon Correll Jr.

Police say Correll was on crutches looking for his runaway Jack Russell terrier when the SUV struck him. The N.C. Highway Patrol said after Correll was struck, the SUV ran off the road and slammed into a fence and a tree. Gomez and a passenger in her SUV were injured.

Gomez is being held under a $1.5 million bond. It's not known whether she has an attorney.
