SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Residents in Southport can expect an upgrade to their recycling program this week. 96-gallon blue carts will be delivered to households this week, just in time for use during the first recycling pickups in December.
Solid waste fees for residents will go up $1.45 each month to pay for the new carts. The larger carts are expected to help ease the problems residents were having with overflowing as well as problems from the smaller bins being blown over.
The 18-gallon bins formerly used for recycling will not be picked up unless specifically requested.
After a public meeting in September, residents gave strong support to a proposal to provide roll-out carts for recycling. The Southport Board of Aldermen gave the go-ahead to contract with Waste Industries for an upgrade in its recycling program.
