WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Witnesses say a man jumped on the hood of an SUV waiting for a train to pass around 6:30 Tuesday night.
According to police, the driver of the SUV made a quick U-turn and left the man at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Martin Street. Police say the man who had been thrown off the SUV ran toward a vehicle that was waiting behind the SUV and jumped on its hood.
The driver of that car, a 54-year-old man from Supply, told police he thought he was about to be carjacked or robbed, so he put the car in reverse which threw the man on the hood to the ground. According to police, the driver hit the man on the ground as he was making a U-turn to get away.
The driver drove a short distance down the street and returned to the scene when police arrived.
Police said the man who had jumped on the hood of two cars was taken to the hospital with critical head injuries. After consulting with the DA's office, it has been determined that the driver will not be charged with a crime.
Investigators are asking any witness to the incident to come forward or call the police department at (910) 343-3600. Information may also be submitted anonymously through Text-A-Tip. Enter Tip708 and the information; then send to CRIMES (274637).
The driver of the black SUV and two people who were with the injured man were not at the scene when officers arrived.
