Report sheds light on helicopter crash in Oak Island | People

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – In June 2012, a helicopter crashed into the ocean near the Oak Island Pier. Now, an investigation report is shedding light on how the helicopter went down.

According to the report, the pilot-rated passenger, Marie Kojimoto, told the pilot she wanted to do an autorotation. The pilot, Will Misrot, reportedly told Kojimoto he didn't' feel comfortable doing that, but she did it anyway.

The report explains in depth exactly what happened. Ultimately, the main rotor rpm continued to decrease until the helicopter hit the ocean and rolled over inverted.

Neither Mistrot nor Kojimoto were injured in the crash.

According to the report, one main rotor blade of the helicopter was damaged. Furthermore, the cabin floor, sidewall structure, and center console had separated from the main structure. There was also evidence of a main rotor blade strike on the tailboom assembly.

The aircraft was a Robinson R22 Mariner, N1089N, registered to Watercraft Photo Helicopter LLC.
