Grand opening, ribbon cutting held for Southport neighborhood

Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the City of Southport, Sanco Homes and Willetts Properties of Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage, recently held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for Southport Way.   

Southport Way, a new neighborhood located off Robert Ruark Drive in Southport, features a series of cottages ranging from $169,900 to $229,900 called the Southport Collection, designed with the look of the old historic charm of Southport with new home appeal.

Economic Development Commission creates new position

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new position in Brunswick County will help reach out to businesses and boost the area’s economy.

Brunswick County’s economic development director Jim Bradshaw said the commission recently hired a marketing specialist. This person will deal with social media and other issues.

Bradshaw said the new position will allow the commission’s other employees to spend more time reaching out to companies that may want to move to the county.

He said right now the commission is working on 12 projects that will hopefully be able to bring jobs to Brunswick County.

Chamber breaks ground on addition

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce broke ground on a 1,700 square foot addition to its existing building.  

Carolina Coastal Designs designed the addition which will include a conference room, galley kitchen and storage room.   

McCullough Construction and Carolina Creations were awarded the bid to construct the facility which will be completed by early fall. 

Funding for the addition came from revenues recievd from the sale of the previous Chamber building to North Carolina Department of Transportation, a donation by Dr. Brad Hilaman and fundraisers.   

The NC DOT purchased the previous Chamber building as part of a R-3324 highway project to conntect Highway 133 to Highway 87.  

That road project is slated to begin construction in February of 2013.
