Board of Elections to decide whether or not to have Sunday early voting hours

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet Monday to decide whether or not to extend early voting hours to Sunday.

Brunswick County Commissioner Charles Warren and several area ministers are making the push for the Sunday voting hours. Warren said many minorities in the county attend church on Sunday mornings and some area churches have expressed interest in bussing people to polls to make voting easier.

Right now, there are no early voting hours scheduled for Sundays.

The board will meet Monday at 9 a.m. in their office at the Brunswick County Government Complex.

SUPPLY, NC (WECT) – A local church will be giving people the chance to try to understand what it is like to be homeless soon.

According to a press release from Rev. Donna Phelps, Building Hope Ministries will be hosting Sleep Out for the Homeless from 10 a.m. to 8 a.m. starting Saturday, May 19, with the goal to raise awareness about area homelessness.

Participants will reflect on and discuss the problem with one another, and a $20 donation will be taken to help fund the Interfaith Nights Sheltering Network Program in the winter.

Cardboard will be given out for makeshift shelters, and unlike the homeless, portable toilets will be onsite, along with food and bottled water.

BCSO holds breakfast in honor of National Prayer Day

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Tens of thousands of prayer events are scheduled today in honor of National Prayer Day.

Congressman Mike McIntyre was in Southport Thursday morning to deliver keynote remarks at the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Prayer breakfast.

President Harry Truman established the day of prayer in 1952. In 1988, Congress declared it would be held the first Thursday of May each year.

President Obama signed this year’s Presidential Proclamation May 1 to officially recognize May 3 as the 61st Annual National Day of Prayer.

In his proclamation, he calls upon the nation to “be humble in our convictions, and courageous in our virtue. Let us pray for those who are suffering around the world, and let us be open to opportunities to ease that suffering.”
