Elementary Science Olympiad debuts in Brunswick County

Brunswick County Schools is proud to host the inaugural Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament on Saturday, May 4th at Cedar Grove Middle School.

The following elementary schools are participating: Bolivia, Southport, Supply, Town Creek, Union, Virginia Williamson, and Waccamaw. This is an exciting opportunity to support our students with STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) education.

"We are thrilled to host the Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament in Brunswick County. In the past, three of our schools traveled to New Hanover County to compete. The New Hanover tournament started to reach capacity, thus inspiring us to start our own! We are proud of the commitment of our students and staff who are participating. We feel certain that it will continue to grow each year." - Amanda Richardson, Co-Director of Brunswick Co. Elementary Science Olympiad

The fun begins at 8:30 a.m. with the awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m.

Brunswick Co. Health Dept. urges citizens to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Health Department is urging citizens to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes because of the risk of contracting Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

The rare, but serious disease “can result in lengthy illnesses, hospitalization, disability and even death,” said Brunswick County Health Director David Stanley in a news release.

Mosquitoes that spread EEE are species that are found in fresh water floodplains or saltwater marshes, according to Jeff Brown, Brunswick County’s mosquito control supervisor. “People should still pay attention to removing water collection sites that some mosquitoes use as breeding grounds to protect against certain kinds of mosquitoes,” he said.

North Carolina averages about one human EEE case each year, the news release stated, and EEE survivors may suffer from long-term effects to the nervous system. There is a vaccine for horses, but there’s no vaccine for humans.

Stanley urges residents to wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants, apply mosquito repellant and avoid being outside at dusk and dawn.

Still working out the kinks of new radio system

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Emergency management officials in Brunswick County are getting ready to unveil the county’s new emergency communication system. But, there are still some issues they need to overcome.

Emergency Services Director Anthony Marzano said the new VIPER radio system will hopefully be put in place in October. He said when Southport tested out the new radios over the Independence Day weekend, there were some issues with reception when crews got closer to the waterfront.

Marzano said radio transmissions can be affected when users get closer and closer to the water. He said the radios operate very much like a cell phone signal. The system will work most of the time, but he said occasionally, there will be a dropped call.
