Get your antiques examined at Southport appraisal fair

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – The 10th annual Antique Appraisal Fair, sponsored by the Southport chapter of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Education Organization), will take place at the Southport Community Center soon.

According to a news release from an event organizer, the fair will be held Sunday, Feb. 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Certified appraisers will be at the event to let folks know about the values of their hand-carried items.

Brunswick County landfill closed for holidays

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County landfill will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24 and 25, along with Tuesday, Jan. 1 for the holidays, according to the county's website.

The county convenience sites will be closed on Monday only.

Brunswick Co. shops taking part in Small Business Saturday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Whether it's getting up early to catch good bargains or surfing the internet, this weekend, millions of Americans will spend money during the biggest shopping weekend of the year.

But if Black Friday or Cyber Monday don't interest you, you may want to shop small as part of Small Business Saturday.

Since many towns in Brunswick County depend on tourists, and it's the off season, many shop owners are focusing on the national campaign, which is aimed at getting customers into small businesses.

More than 20 businesses in the Southport-Oak Island area will have specials Saturday as part of the campaign.

Market in Oak Island to offer food, art and jewelry

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The Town of Oak Island is gearing up for its weekly farmer’s market.

People can come out and shop every Monday from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. It begins in July and will end in September.

The market will be held directly behind town hall on the soccer fields at the corner of SE 46th Street and E. Dolphin Drive.

Most days the market’s vendors will offer locally grown vegetables and fresh seafood, including shrimp, fish and crabs. Other regular vendors will offer homemade cakes, breads, brownies, honey and more. 

If you’re not looking for food, you’re in luck. Local artists and crafters will sell their handmade items, such as paintings, jewelry and crafts.

Southport Beat hits the note

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It was a country rocking good time at the first Southport Beat in downtown Southport on Friday, June 15.

Participating shops were open until 8 p.m. Restaurants were serving specials. The country band Cowboy Chrome headlined and kept the crowd dancing with Spider Mike providing some entertaining music as well.

Also in Franklin Square Park, artist Jim McIntosh painted and the Winding River Car Club showed off some great looking vehicles while Mr. P’s Bistro, Silver Coast Winery, Moore Street Market and Ports of Call Bistro provided the crowd samples.

Keziah Park would not be outdone and with Gracie & Tic Toc the Clowns, Stanley Mandell on Violin, Ken’s Accordion, Madison Brendel’s clogging demonstrations, Mr. P’s serving samples from their children’s menu and games with Sandy it was a fun evening for the children.

Southport Beat begins on June 15 in Franklin Square Park

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new version of last year’s Shop to the Beat has been planned by the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce for the summer of 2012.

Southport Beat will transform the evenings in Southport to a festive and exciting atmosphere on the third Friday of each month from June through September. 

Southport Beat will have a broad range of entertainment and music available for visitors and residents to enjoy in Franklin Square Park. Entertainment appealing to children will be located in Keziah Park from 5 until 8 p.m. This will provide easy access to the entertainment and more audience for the performers.

While the entertainment will be located in the parks, the action will be city-wide as participating shops and restaurants will be open, and rocking and rolling in their own way.

Mark your calendars and join in Southport Beat on June 15, July 20, August 17 and September 21.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Over 100 of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce members enjoyed an evening of Networking After Hours and gracious hospitality at The Hampton Inn in Southport.

Hampton Inn in Southport recently completed a new renovation of its lobby with the goal of making it more than just a  breakfast area.

By the reviews from our Chamber members, it was an overwhelming success. Members enjoyed tours of several rooms and their meeting space.
