BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Southern Cape Fear Bridal Showcase was held this past Sunday at the Southport Community Building. 

Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber Commerce member businesses, specializing in providing all types of wedding services, were on hand to assist brides and grooms plan for their important day. The event drew 30% more brides than the 2011 event, which organizers at the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce view as a positive indicator for the local economy. 

The Southern Cape Fear Bridal Showcase is held annually in February. It is an event of the Southport Oak Island Area Chamber Of Commerce and sponsored by 3 Cheers Party Rentals.

Bolivia Elementary receives $10,000 worth of school supplies for free

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A Brunswick County school was recently given $10,000 worth of school supplies, including more than 8,000 pens and pencils and more than 200 journals.

Fourth grade teacher Sherri Clark says she was looking for school supply coupons over the summer, when she decided to enter Bolivia Elementary into a national contest.

The company Paper Mate donated school supplies to the school that received the most votes, and Bolivia came in first place.

The supplies were given to the school last week.

The principal tells WECT.com that they're still trying to figure out how to evenly distribute the supplies.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Recently engaged and don't know where to start? Planning a wedding and need some ideas? The Southern Cape Fear Bridal Expo is just the place to start planning for your perfect day. 

Over 20 vendors specializing in weddings will be at the Southport Community Building on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 1 until 4 p.m. There will be over $1,000 worth of door prizes given away during the Bridal Showcase. Vendors include party rentals, caters, venues, florists, cakes, wine shops, video productions, disc jockeys, accommodations, photographers, transportation, wedding officials and planners.

Every bride in attendance will also receive an official Southern Cape Fear Coast Wedding planner. It includes helpful hints, timelines, information on traditions and a list of vendors ready to work with brides in our area.

This is an event of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber Of Commerce and is sponsored by 3 Cheers Party Rentals. Admission is $5 per person. Brunswick County boasts drop in unemployment rate

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Brunswick County’s unemployment rate decreased 0.6 percent in November when compared to the results from a year ago.

Of the 49,144 people in the labor force, 5,106 are unemployed, according to a report from the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Employment Security. That 10.4 percent rate is down slightly from the 10.5 percent in October, which is an estimate subject to large seasonal patterns.

Security Savings Bank to close two branches due to economic recession

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Security Savings Bank announced that it will close two of its branches in order to “respond to the prolonged economic recession.”

The branches located at 1629 S. Madison Street in Whiteville and 204 S. Main Street in Randleman will close their doors at the end of March 2012, according to a news release.

Additionally, Security Savings Bank will eliminate the teller operations functions at 5201 Southport-Supply Road SE in Southport. The location will reportedly remain open as a loan production and servicing office.

Letters announcing the branch closures and reduction in services will be mailed to affected customers on Friday, Dec. 30. All accounts currently maintained at the branches will automatically be transferred to another branch office of Security Savings Bank.

Brunswick County landfill, schools closed for holidays

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County landfill will be closed on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 23-24 and Saturday, Dec. 31 for the holidays. The county convenience sites will be closed on Saturday only.

Brunswick County Schools will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 21 through Monday, Jan. 2 for schools on the traditional calendar. The Early College High School will be closed from Dec. 21 through Jan. 5 for students.
