Skate park in Oak Island reopening

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The Oak Island Skate Park will be reopening soon, according to a news release from a town spokesperson.

The park will open Saturday, March 9 from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday the 10 from 1 to 6 p.m.

Skaters will be required to wear helmets and pads, which the park offers for a $1 rental fee.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 2013 Spring Fling Tennis Tournament in Brunswick County is just around the corner.

According to Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, the adult tournament will be held Saturday, April 6 at Ocean Isle Beach Park, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain date 4/7/13).

The youth tournament will take place Saturday, April 20, also at Ocean Isle Beach Park.

Take a swing a tennis, register for lessons

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at tennis, now’s your chance.

Brunswick County Parks and Recreation is now accepting registration for adult and youth tennis lessons.

The lessons begin March 25 at Ocean Isle Beach Park, Lockwood Folly, and Smithville Park.

The fee is $65/per person. Age groups and skill levels vary and private lessons are also available.

Youth lessons will be held on Mondays and adult lessons will be held on Wednesdays.

Register for the Lucky Leprechan 5K now

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – While you can register for the Lucky Leprechaun 5K up until race day, the clock is ticking if you want to be guaranteed a T-shirt from the event.

The race will be held at the Winds Beach Resort in Ocean Isle Beach, Saturday, March 16. There will be a shotgun start time of 9 a.m.

Runners are encouraged to dress in St. Patrick’s Day apparel and can even bring their dogs along for the fun.

Proceeds from the race will go towards providing scholarships to low income youth and adults for participation in Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Programs.

CFCC women's basketball team to "Play for Pink" tonight for breast cancer awareness

WILMINGTON - Tonight at the Schwartz Center, the Cape Fear Community College women's basketball team will be trading in their regular blue and white uniforms for pink.

The lady Sea Devils will take on Brunswick Community College for the annual "Play for Pink" game to support breast cancer awareness.

Representatives of the Pretty in Pink Foundation will be at the game, which starts at 6 p.m. General admission is $3.

Winter fishing seminar scheduled

Winter fishing seminar scheduled

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – A winter fishing seminar, hosting by Oak Island’s Parks and Recreation Department, will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 at the recreation center, according to a news release on behalf of the parks and rec. department.

From 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., local fishing captains Jerry Dilsaver and Jimmy Price will share fishing tips and techniques.

Dilsaver will discuss king and offshore fishing, and Price will discuss flounder and inshore species.
