Red Cross wants you to get ready for Hurricane Sandy

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Red Cross is already getting ready for Hurricane Sandy, and they say you should be too.

They're recommending that people get their hurricane kits ready. That means, a three day supply of food and water - plus batteries and flashlights.

The Red Cross has spent the day getting ready, organizing its volunteers who will head to the hardest hit places to help.

Friday morning, the Red Cross will have a conference call with top officials. They think they will have a better idea where the storm will hit by then.

David Garrison , who is with the red cross, says it's a challenge figuring out where to put resources so early - but their volunteers are ready to go as soon as they get the call.

So, what do you need to do right now?

County could take over Oak Island 911 center sooner than later

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The Town of Oak Island has been preparing for months to switch its services over to the county, but the town could be cutting it close.

Right now, the town is down to only four dispatchers. If another person leaves, leaders will be forced to make the switch before the deadline of October 1.

Oak Island is the last town in Brunswick County to hand over its 911 services.

The county recently received a $2.1 million grant to build a new 911 center because they are taking over 911 operations for Oak Island.

Emergency services director Anthony Marzano said the building will be constructed to withstand a category 5 hurricane and other disasters.

2 NC coastal counties in moderate drought

WILMINGTON, NC (AP) - The drought is back in two coastal counties in southeastern North Carolina.

The North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council reports that Brunswick and New Hanover counties are in a moderate drought. Two dozen other counties around the state are classified as abnormally dry.

Farmers report they are in fairly good shape, so far.

New Hanover County Cooperative Extension director Al Hight told the StarNews of Wilmington the area along the coast is in fairly good shape, despite the recent lack of rain.

Tropical Depression Beryl brought enough rain to the state in June that North Carolina was declared drought-free for the first time since 2010. The relatively dry weather since then has resulted in the drought classification for Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Rainfall totals neared 4 inches in Boiling Spring Lakes early Wednesday morning.

According to First Alert Meteorologist Eric Davis, 3.60 inches of rain fell during the heavy downpours.

Davis said an area of low pressure near the Carolina coast will keep the weather unsettled throughout the day. A few peaks of sunshine should be enough for highs to reach the upper 80s.
